![]() The department is the part of the Physico-technical faculty established on September, the 1st 1962. During the first period the faculty provided the USSR's military - industrial complex with the experts in the field of nuclear power industry. The development of the nuclear power industry in the country and all over the world demanded for organization of the personnel training for design, manufacturing, erection, commissioning and operation of the equipment, circuits, loops and systems of the nuclear power plants. In response to the demand of the branch in 1972 at the Physico - technical faculty was established the department "Nuclear power plants" in order to train specialists capable to work in the fuel and energy industry with the emphasis on nuclear power industry at all the stages: from R&D to nuclear power plant decommissioning. The teaching staff formed on the basis of other departments of the Physico-technical faculty outsourcing the specialists from the Experimental Design Bureau of Machine Building; the first head of the department was one of the founders of the Physico-technical faculty, M. P. Tuzov, the NSTU's rector. Under his direction was set up the department's curriculum, were established the university laboratories, there were organized the commercial and state-funded R&Ds. V. M. Budov, Doctor of Engineering, full professor, the head of the computation division of the Experimental Design Bureau of Machine Building who in 1977 replaced M. P. Tuzov and became the head of the department, made a significant contribution to the department development. Under direction of V. M. Budov was organized the structure of training of the future department teaching staff by means of Ph. D. theses' defending by graduates of the Physico - technical faculty, who formed the actual teaching staff of the department. In 1989 - 1990 the department was headed by Vladimir Aleksandrovich Farafonov. Aleksandr Viktorovich Beznosov became the head of the department in 1990. Under his direction the department became the leading one at the faculty and the Polytechnic Institute. By his direction and direct involvement were opened two dissertation boards to defend the Ph. D. theses, then two dissertation boards to defend the Doctor dissertations. As of 2006 the department possesses the Doctorate Boards to defend the dissertations D 212.165.03 and DS212.012.01 in the professions 05.04.11 - "Nuclear reactor industry, machinery, plants and nuclear industry materials technology"; 05.14.03 - " Nuclear power plants", 05.02.01 "Materials technology (in nuclear power industry)". Since 1999 was established and set up the training in the professions 100500 and 190600. In 2002 was established the branch of the department at the State Research Institute (GNU) "Radio physical research institute" to train the specialists in the profession "Biomedicine engineering (Engineering of bioinstrumentation (medical-biological apparatus))". Also in 2002 was established the branch of the department at the federal state unitary enterprise "Experimental design bureau of machine building named after I. I. Afrikantov". In 2005 was established the branch of the department at the federal state unitary enterprise "Nizhny Novgorod State Research, Design, Construction, and Survey Institute Atomenergoproekt". At present the department's staff consists of more than 30 persons including one academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 4 academicians and 1 corresponding member (of academies of different science branches), 2 holders (laureates) of the Sate Prizes, one Honored Worker of Science of Russian Federation, 14 Doctors of Science, 12 full professors. Since 2003 the head of the department became Sergey Mikhaylovich Dmitriev, Doctor of Engineering, full professor, and the NSTU's pro-rector for teaching and methodological activities. Staff professors (in-service professors):
Training support staff:
The leading specialists of the branch cooperate with the department:
They are the leading experts of the branch giving the corresponding courses and transferring to the students hands-on experience of working in the industry and medical practice. Teaching and methodological activitiesThe department's staff trains students of the professions 140404.65 - "Nuclear power plants", 140101.65 - "Heat-power plants", 200402.65 - "Biomedicine engineering". The department's staff teaches in more than 40 special subjects of current professions in accordance with the curricula. The department teaching staff trains:
In order to provide the training more than 50 teaching guidelines and teaching aids have been published by the NSTU' s publishing house and by the central publishing houses The department possesses the university laboratories (in accordance with curricula). The training facilities of the department branches at the Experimental design bureau of machine building, the Radio physical research institute, "Atomenergoproekt" as well as other major city enterprises like Research Institute of Mechanics, Regional Medical diagnostic center are used as laboratories in the course of training. R&DThere are the following main trends of research at the department:
Social activitiesS. M. Dmitriev is the academic secretary of two Doctorate Boards (D212.165.03, DS212.012.01) at NSTU, the executive secretary of the Nizhny Novgorod regional branch of the Russian Academy of Industrial Ecology. He is the member of teaching and methodological department of the profession 101000, member of the NSTU's Academic Council and Council of Physico-technical faculty, chairman of the teaching and methodological department of the profession 550900, professions 101000 and 190600.
